Job Summary
The Associate Engineer will be responsible for FERC/NYISO support and perform engineering and design services, provide construction and project management assistance to ensure successful completion of large and small scale electric transmission projects including those in preliminary states with the NYISO (New York Independent System Operator). Provide technical support to Operations, Project Management, Planning, Permitting, Public Affairs, Power System Management, as well as external customers in support of the LIPA Transmission system. Evaluate the application and use of systems, materials, equipment and new technologies in support of the LIPA transmission system.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop technical scoping of required one-lines for future overhead and underground transmission circuits proposed, modified or interconnected with. This would include those connecting to LIPA owned or LIPA/NYPA/Developer contracted substations including internal capital work and NYISO interconnection projects.
- Evaluate the proposals from external sources for changes to the LIPA system. Including the design of electric transmission systems and related facilities based upon reliability and economy, with consideration to operation, safety and maintenance requirements.
- Technically support a team of PSEGLI technical contributors to produce quality reports and correspondence to NYS agencies, LIPA and internal departments.
- Utilizing knowledge of engineering design and analysis of electric transmission systems from 23kV to 345kV to develop material, engineering design, construction specifications/associated drawings, takeoffs, request estimates, and standards as required for successful completion of assigned transmission projects (Overhead or Underground Transmission).
- Develop, review and revise standards as a result of recommendations by industry associations and codes (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, AEIC, EPRI and NESC) related to state of the art materials and engineering/operating methods.
- Participate in Research & Development initiatives, evaluate and procure new materials/equipment to improve performance of the electric transmission system utilizing knowledge of technical evaluation of specifications for equipment and materials and to determine compatibility in the intended application /design.
- Work with internal and external organizations/customers to ensure prudent engineering solutions are undertaken to special engineering and construction projects.
- Perform budget/project cost estimates, special engineering studies, investigations and calculations as required. Adhere to Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) guidelines as they apply to the electric industry.
Strong interpersonal, communications, writing and administrative skills. - Some experience with various business and technical software (e.g. Word, Excel, and AutoCAD).
- Must possess a valid US drivers license with a safe and satisfactory driving history with the ability to travel in the territory as needed.
Job Specific Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- A minimum of 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications
- Must demonstrate clear and concise writing and verbal communications skills
- Must demonstrate effective problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Must have strong planning and organization skills
- Must be adaptable and results-oriented
- Must have demonstrated leadership skills, professionalism and customer/client focus
- Must possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driving history
- Compliance with the Department of Energy's regulation 10 CFR 810 is required

- Able to read / understand electrical one lines
