Job Summary
This is an entry level position as an Engineer in the Relay Protection Operations area supporting the Transmission and Distribution system by specialized electrical testing and guidance on assets in over 200 transmission and distribution (T&D) substations on Long Island. This position will evolve to be responsible for providing technical solutions to maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, asset health and inspections of substation equipment. This work also includes supporting emergency repair or replacement of substation equipment. Responsible to perform diagnostic testing on the electric equipment, analyze the data and direct corrective actions as required. In this position, numerous relationships with vendors and peers are cultivated, which allow for timely diagnostic work and equipment repairs.
Job Responsibilities
The Relay Protection Operations Engineer provides support to the T&D system island-wide:
- Review relay equipment test result documentation to ensure it meets NERC PRC requirement and use for audit evidence
- Review NERC CIP and PRC Compliance standards and update associated Protection Operation’s process documentation
- Perform Short-circuit studies to perform relay setting calculations and develop relay settings on the Distribution system utilizing fault simulation software, Relay functional, and schematic drawings
- Investigate system events including disturbances, mis-operations, inadvertent trips using relay oscillography and sequence of event records
- Prepare written protection related guidelines as required
- Assisting with testing and commissioning of new Electric Production, Transmission and Distribution protection systems
- Participate in Relay Technician and Supervisor’s training programs
- Identify and obtain spare parts to maintain instruments and protective relays.
- During storm/outage restoration efforts, you may be required to perform functions different from normal operations and your regular work schedule. You may also be required to work in an alternate location.
Roles that include NERC CIP responsibilities:
- Owns functional tasks on day-to-day compliance with the all the NERC Standard's Requirements assigned.
- Serves as contact for all assigned compliance activities. Coordinates the reviews and approvals as specified in Standard Requirements.
- Ensures required policies/procedures are followed and that any local dept-level procedures encompassing the NERC Compliance Standards Requirements are up to date.
- Provides materials for required reviews and approvals of all assigned compliance activities for submission.
- Works with SME Mgrs and Lead SME Contributor on functional day-to-day compliance activities to ensure all are effectively coordinated, sustained in the LOB. Provides updated and approved input to the Lead SME for the Reliability Standard Audit Worksheets, CIP Evidence Request Tool, O&P Evidence Tracking Sheet and for all assigned NERC Standard. Includes FERC, NERC, NPCC, LIPA, NY State, DHS.
Job Specific Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
- A minimum of 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience
- Reading and comprehending technical and operational manuals and instructions, safety rules, policies and procedures, compliance standards, and instruction manuals
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, Power Point)
- Must have the ability to build effective, respectful, working relationships.
- This position requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, applicants must possess a valid US driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.
Preferred / Desired Skills:
- NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering and/or Professional Engineering licensure
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), NERC CIP and PRC standards, and other related guidelines related to electric transmission system engineering, design and operation.
- Familiarity with Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) guidelines.
